Intermediate2 min🎯 Articulation Drills

P-B-M Lip Press

Alternate between "pa-ba-ma" syllables rapidly. This exercises the full range of bilabial (two-lip) sounds, improving clarity for "p", "b", and "m" which are commonly softened in casual speech.

Instructions

  1. Sit or stand with good posture.
  2. Start by saying "PA" clearly, pressing your lips together firmly before releasing.
  3. Immediately follow with "BA" — same lip press, different voicing.
  4. Follow with "MA" — lips together, sound through your nose.
  5. Repeat the full pa-ba-ma cycle 10 times.
  6. Rest for 10 seconds, then repeat 2 more sets.

Repetitions: 10 cycles, 3 sets with 10-second rests

Common Mistakes

  • Not pressing lips firmly enough — the sounds should be crisp
  • Rushing so much that the three sounds become indistinguishable
  • Holding breath instead of breathing naturally

Variations

  • Try saying the sequence with increasing volume
  • Alternate: pa-pa, ba-ba, ma-ma for focused practice on each sound

If your lips feel sore or tired, take a longer rest. This exercise should feel like a workout, not pain.
