Breath Control with Humming

Practice sustained humming on a comfortable pitch while maintaining steady airflow. This builds breath support essential for long phrases and projecting your voice.

Instructions

  1. Stand or sit with relaxed, upright posture.
  2. Take a slow, deep breath through your nose for 4 counts.
  3. Close your lips gently and hum on a comfortable pitch.
  4. Sustain the hum for as long as your breath allows — aim for 10 seconds.
  5. Release, breathe naturally, and repeat 5 times.
  6. On each repetition, try to make the hum steady and even.

Repetitions: 5 hums, 3 sets

Common Mistakes

  • Humming too loudly — it should be a gentle, resonant vibration
  • Running out of breath quickly — focus on slow, controlled exhalation
  • Tensing the throat or shoulders

Variations

  • Hum at different pitches: low, medium, high
  • Try humming while gently massaging your throat area

Never strain your voice. If humming causes any discomfort, stop and breathe normally.
